Description

The creamy floral cascades of this deciduous shrub are reminiscent of a frothing ocean wave, hence the common name oceanspray. A charming, attractive shrub for the garden landscape, oceanspray can also be used for habitat restoration and wild plantings. A common plant in the Klamath-Siskiyou region, oceanspray can be found in many habitat types, but most often in the understory of, or openings within, forests and woodlands, on dry talus slopes, and in riparian areas. Drought tolerant once established, oceanspray is adaptable and easy to grow, growing to a height of 5′-15′. Blooms June-July. This suckering shrub is easy to prune and shape. Oceanspray is a larval host plant for Lorquin’s admiral, gray hairstreak, spring azure, pale swallowtail, and brown elfin butterflies. The flowers are also attractive to bumblebees and other small native bees. Oceanspray is an important cultural plant for Native Americans because of its hard, fire resistant wood that was made into many different wooden implements.
