Description

Bolander’s tarweed’s northern range extension is in southern Oregon, where it can be found growing in mountain meadows and other moist areas such as streambanks and lake margins. Previously classified in the genus Madia, Bolander’s tarweed was separated into a new genus, Kyhosia, in 1999. Kyhosia bolanderi is the only species in the genus Kyhosia. This cheerful perennial wildflower rises from lance-shaped leaves and a 1.5′-3′ slender stem covered in dark, sticky resin glands. The bright yellow flowers have adapted to the heat of the day by closing and shriveling up to conserve water, opening back up by late evening through the cool of the morning. This adaptation is a trait it shares with other tarweeds in the genus Madia, which unlike Bolander’s tarweed, are all annuals. Bolander’s tarweed is perfect for a moist, sunny location.

Kyhosia bolanderi seed packets contain 1/2 teaspoon of seed.

Seed Germination Instructions
