Description

As the common name implies, hot rock penstemon prefers to grow in dry, hot, rocky habitat in the full, baking sun. If you have a sun-baked rocky spot, hot rock penstemon will love it! In fact, the specific epithet “deustus” means “scorched,” clearly defining the habitat it prefers. You will find hot rock penstemon growing on rock outcrops, gravelly soil, rocky ridgelines, in chaparral, and other arid environments. Unlike other penstemons in the Klamath-Siskiyou Mountains, hot rock penstemon has creamy-white or pale tan to yellow flowers with distinctive purple lines. Although the tubular, whorled flowers don’t stand out at a distance as much as the more common purple or pink penstemons do, the flowers are actually quite beautiful and interesting when inspected at close range. Blooms May-July. Hot rock penstemon has a branched woody base and evergreen foliage. Grows 1.5′-2.5′ tall. The thick leaves are toothed and bright green in the summer, turning brilliant shades of red in the winter. Requires sharp drainage and dry summer conditions. Perfect for a rock garden. Highly attractive to many pollinators, especially bumble bees and hummingbirds.

Penstemon deustus seed packets contain 1/8 teaspoon of seed.
