Description

Oregon checkermallow is an alluring and showy wildflower that loves wet meadows, streamsides and other wetland environments. As the common name implies, Oregon checkermallow is in the mallow (Malvaceae) family. The upright stems grow from a woody taproot and 2′-4′ tall. At the top of the flowering stems are variable spike-like racemes of pretty, rose pink, 5-petaled flowers that bloom May-July, or later in the season with deadheading. Oregon checkermallow flower clusters can be loose or tightly compact depending on the variety, somewhat resembling miniature hollyhocks. The green, mallow-like leaves are variable, but generally palmate and shallow to deeply lobed. Very attractive to bees and butterflies. A larval host plant for butterflies. Oregon checkermallow is a great addition to a wildflower or pollinator garden, or habitat restoration project in wetland habitats within its range. Prefers full sun to partial shade in medium to moist conditions.

Oregon checkermallow (Sidalcea oregana) seed packets contain approximately 80 seeds per packet.
