Description
Tufted hairgrass is the go-to native grass for moist locations. It is a widespread grass that is generally found in moist mountain meadows, along streambanks, wetlands, and in moist locations in various habitat types. It is a showy native grass with a fountain of gracefully arching flowering stems growing from a clump of green leaves. Tufted hairgrass usually grows 2′-3′ tall. It is easily grown in organically rich, well-drained and moist soil. Tufted hairgrass is a long-lived grass species and is a larval host plant for numerous butterfly species.
