As the common name implies, this wild buckwheat species has tall, woolly vegetation, growing 1.5′-3′ tall. From a large clump of upward-pointing basal leaves arises erect, branching stems topped by white to pink flower clusters. Tall woolly buckwheat can be found growing on dry hillsides and ridges in rocky, gravelly, or sandy soil. A thick taproot allows this species to be drought tolerant. Late-season flowers occurs June-October, depending on elevation, providing late-season nectar and pollen for pollinators at a time when most other wildflowers are done blooming. The flowers are prized by numerous native pollinators, including native bees, pollinating flies, beetles, butterflies and wasps. Wild buckwheats, in general are used by many species of butterfly as larval host plants. Perfect for a sunny, dry location or large rock garden.

Seed Germination Instructions

60 days cold-moist stratification. Sow outside in fall to late winter.
