Description

Round headed buckwheat is a tenacious wild buckwheat that inhabits dry, rocky ridges, chaparral, juniper woodland, openings in pine forests, and shrub-steppe. It’s affinity for rocky places has given rise to an additional common name, rock buckwheat. It is native to the western United States from northeastern Washington, Idaho, Oregon to northern California. This is a small shrub or subshrub that grows 1-2 ft. across and 6″-1.5′ tall. Round headed buckwheat has a mounding shape and woolly leaves that are widely lance-shaped to somewhat oval. The creamy white, pink or yellow umbel flower clusters rise on a stalks in late spring to early summer. Native wild buckwheats are larval host plants for many butterfly species, and the flowers are highly attractive to native bees and other pollinators. Round headed buckwheat will grow best in dry, well drained soil in full sun.
