Description

Junegrass, or prairie junegrass, is a widespread perennial native bunchgrass. Native to much of North America, junegrass can be quite variable depending on the location, but is generally loosely-tufted with mostly basal leaves and a shallow root system. The yellow-brown flowering panicle is narrow and spikelike, and when junegrass is in full flower, the plants are typically 1-2′ tall. Junegrass grows in a large number of habitat types, including, grassland, prairie, chaparral, oak woodland, pine forest, fir forests, and alpine fell-fields. Junegrass is adaptable to many different soil types as well, and can tolerate both heavy clay or rocky conditions, as well as sandy soil. The plant is semi deciduous in summer, with some persistent leaves. It is best suited to full sun to part shade and medium-dry to dry soil. Junegrass is a larval host plant for skipper butterflies.

Koeleria macrantha seed packets contain 1/2 teaspoon of seed.
