Description

A member of the carrot family, California lomatium is often called wild parsley because of its resemblance to and taste that is similar to culinary parsley. The blue-green foliage gives rise to broad umbels of yellow-green flowers frequently visited by many small pollinating insects. California lomatium is a larval host plant for the anise swallowtail butterfly that uses plants in the carrot family. Long used as a strong medicinal plant by Native Americans and modern herbalists alike, California lomatium is used medicinally for a variety of ailments. A perennial wildflower that typically grows 2′-4′ tall, California lomatium inhabits very dry, sunny, rocky areas, ridgelines, chaparral slopes, and openings in oak woodland.
