Description

There are very few native plants with leaves as velvety-soft as velvet lupine. The green leaf is covered in white woolly fibers and stiff hairs, making the leaf soft to the touch and attractive to the eye. Native to western North America, velvet lupine grows in a variety of habitat types. In the Klamath-Siskiyou it is often found in part-shade in openings or on the edge of woodland or forested habitat at lower elevations, and on open, dry, exposed slopes and upland prairies at higher elevations in the mountains. Velvet lupine grows 1.5′-3′ tall and has a dense raceme of lavender to white pea-like flowers that fade to brown before going to seed. Velvet lupine blooms in early summer and is a perennial lupine that dies back to the ground in the winter. Deer resistant, drought tolerant, attractive to bees, and nitrogen fixing.

Velvet lupine (Lupinus leucophyllus) seed packets contain approximately 40 seeds per packet.
