Description

Although a widely planted native shrub, Oregon grape should not be overlooked, as its attractive evergreen foliage, holly-shaped leaves, lovely early-season yellow flowers and deep blue fall berries make it an excellent pollinator and wildlife plant. Widely used medicinally, the edible Oregon grape berries can also be made into jams and other recipes. Growing to a max height of 6′ tall and 5′ wide, Oregon grape will slowly spread by rhizome. Tolerant of both summer water and summer drought, Oregon grape is an easy-going native shrub that is great for shady or woodland plantings, but it often does well in full sun too.

Tall Oregon grape (Berberis aquifolium) seed packets contain approximately 50 seeds per packet.

Seed Germination Instructions

90 days of cold-moist stratification is recommended. Sow seeds outside in fall and let nature do the stratification naturally outside, if you have cold enough winters. If you live in an area with mild winters, you may need to provide the cold-moist stratification artificially. For more information please read through the information in our Seed Germination and Propagation Reference Guide.
