Description

Glacier lily is usually found blooming along the edge of melting snow or in areas where snow recently melted at higher elevations in subalpine mountain meadows, slopes and rocky areas. It is sometimes called avalanche lily due to the steep, rocky, mountainous terrain it inhabits. Native to the mountain West, glacier lily is a small perennial wildflower with a large presence. It’s bright and sunny yellow flowers are impressive when flowering en masse. The plant grows from a deep bulb and only grows to about 4″-6″ tall. The yellow-petaled flowers have showy white stamens with yellow to red anthers. The flowers are pollinated by bumble bees. This species will be happy when grown in an irrigated rock garden in full sun to part shade. After flowering in the spring the bulb will go dormant. This species is slow to grow from seed and may take 3-4 years to reach maturity, but oh is it worth it!

Glacier lily (Erythronium grandiflorum) seed packets contain approximately 120 seeds.
